Italy tourist attractions

Italy, eh? What does that word do for you? Send you into a dreamy daze about crispy pizza, sumptuous ice cream, aperitifs in a piazza and the domes of Rome? Us too. And when you consider Italy tourist attractions, there are few finer countries in the world, so long as you prefer the older to the newer, that is.

Heritage

Europe’s first civilisation of note was Greek, but it was the Romans who conquered pretty much all of it, leaving lasting legacies in buildings, language and culture across the continent. As the heart of this empire, Italy is thus blessed with some superb relics from the age. The most famous and awe inspiring is The Colosseum in Rome - the huge amphitheatre which still stands pretty much intact today in the heart of the city is an incredible popular tourist attraction in Italy.

Architecture

The Pantheon, nestled amongst Rome’s ancient sprawling centre is possibly the finest example of an ancient Roman structure in Italy and is still in use as a church today. The beating heart of ancient Rome, The Forum, still stands today too and is a must-see for tourists.

Italy is also the heart of the Catholic church, and the wealth and influence of that institution is massively evident. One feature was its patronage of the greatest artists of the Renaissance and the religious work it inspired. The Vatican Museum is one of the greatest art galleries in the world, with the incomparable covering of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo at its heart.

The awe inspiring St. Peters Basilica, the central church, dominates the skyline next door. Further afield, in Milan, Leonardo Da Vinci’s superb “Last Supper” sits on the mundane wall of a former cantene.

The Renaissance spread far and wide, and the other centre of its brilliance was Florence - see The Uffizi in all its glory - Michelangelo’s David et al - there.
For a truly romantic trip, Italy is hard to beat. The city of Venice – beautiful and inspired - is home to numerous treasures: firstly, itself as hardly another city compares; then St, Mark’s Basilica, the adjacent Doge’s Palace and plenty more, rich in treasures and artistic brilliance. Or take a trip and gaze at The Trevi Fountain in Rome. Fling a penny when you are there, and return you shall…

The Colosseum

Some world landmarks need little or no introduction- and the Colosseum in Rome is certainly one of them. The city is full of Roman monuments, but for the sheer scale and awe-inspiring beauty not much comes near to matching the Colosseum.

St Mark’s Basilica

St. Mark’s Basilica (“Basilica di San Marco a Venezia in Italian) has stood overlooking St Mark’s Square in Venice, “the drawing room of Europe” according to Napoleon (it is said), since its consecration in 1094.

Pompeii

The sheer thought of a place like Pompeii- that it could still exist in a form almost exactly the same as it did almost 2000 years ago- is enough for many.
